When I started composting, I expected questions about gardening, not arguments with my neighbors. I built a sturdy enclosed compost system behind my garage using heavy duty bins designed to keep animals out while turning kitchen scraps and yard waste into rich soil. I followed every recommendation I could find, adding the right balance of…

When I moved into my house, I never expected that something as simple as watering flowers would turn into a neighborhood feud. I had spent years building garden beds filled with vegetables, roses, and native plants that needed careful attention through the summer. My next door neighbor seemed friendly from the beginning, often complimenting the…

When I bought my home, the backyard was nothing but patchy grass, weeds, and compacted clay that barely supported anything green. I spent every weekend that spring transforming it into the vegetable garden I had always wanted. Friends occasionally stopped by to chat, but nearly all of the work was mine from beginning to end….

I turned most of my front yard into raised vegetable beds after realizing how much unused space I had. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, lettuce, and herbs slowly replaced the plain grass that had been there for years. Plenty of neighbors stopped to ask questions, and most were encouraging about the project. One man who lived…

Every summer I end up with more tomatoes than my family can possibly eat, so I turn the extra harvest into homemade sauce using a recipe my grandmother taught me years ago. It takes an entire weekend of chopping, simmering, and canning before the jars are ready. I only make enough for family, close friends,…

When my husband and I bought our house, we decided the sunny front yard would become a vegetable garden instead of another patch of thirsty grass. We built neat raised beds, added stone paths, and planted tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, beans, and herbs that quickly became the pride of the neighborhood. Even people walking their dogs…

Gardening has always been my favorite way to unwind after work. The small fig cutting did not look like much when my father handed it to me during one of our last visits together. He told me it came from a tree that had been growing in our family for decades and said he hoped I would keep it alive long after he was gone. After…

Every spring I order a large load of compost to prepare my vegetable beds for the growing season. It is the one delivery I plan weeks in advance because everything else depends on having healthy soil ready before planting begins. My neighbors all know I spend most weekends outside working in the garden, and many…

When my family moved into our neighborhood, one of the first projects we completed was building a small backyard chicken coop. We carefully checked the local rules, bought a handful of laying hens, and kept the entire area clean and well maintained. Fresh eggs quickly became part of our weekly routine, and any extra cartons…
