Homeowner Says His Neighbor Has Been Letting Her Landscaping Crew Blow Grass Clippings Directly Into His Koi Pond Every Week, Now the Water Is Coated in Green Sludge
When I built the koi pond in my backyard, I wanted a quiet place where I could unwind after long workdays. The pond had taken nearly two years to complete, with carefully stacked stone edges, aquatic plants, and a filtration system designed to keep the water crystal clear.
The colorful koi eventually became so comfortable that they would swim toward anyone who approached with food. It was the centerpiece of my yard and something I maintained every single week. Then a problem began that at first seemed minor, but slowly turned into something that threatened everything I had worked to create.
The First Signs Were Easy to Dismiss
One afternoon I noticed a thin layer of fresh grass floating across the surface of the pond. At first, I assumed a gust of wind had carried clippings from somewhere nearby. I scooped them out with a net and thought nothing more about it.
The following week, the same thing happened again. This time there was even more debris, including tiny leaves and shredded weeds. I cleaned the pond a second time, believing it was simply bad luck.
The Pattern Became Impossible to Ignore
After several weekends, I realized the clippings always appeared on the same day. My neighbor, Karen, hired a landscaping company that arrived every Thursday afternoon. Less than an hour after they finished mowing her yard, fresh grass covered the surface of my pond.
I stood outside one Thursday and watched from a distance. As one worker used a powerful leaf blower, I could see clippings flying over the fence and drifting directly into my backyard.
My Pond Began Looking Different
The water gradually lost the clear appearance it had maintained for years. Thin green patches started forming around the edges where the floating grass collected. Even after removing the visible debris, the water looked slightly cloudy.
The koi still swam normally, but they disappeared beneath the surface more often. Something about the pond no longer felt healthy, even if the changes seemed subtle.
A Friendly Conversation Seemed Like the Best Option
I walked next door after the landscaping crew had left and explained what I had observed. Karen listened politely while I described the clippings landing in the pond. I asked whether she could speak with the crew about directing their blowers away from the fence.
She nodded and said she would mention it the following week. I thanked her, believing the problem had finally been solved through a simple conversation.
Nothing Changed the Following Week
The next Thursday I watched again from my patio. The crew followed exactly the same routine as before. One worker blew grass across the property line while another continued trimming the lawn without paying attention.
Within minutes, another layer of fresh clippings floated across the pond. I realized Karen either forgot the conversation or chose not to bring it up.
The Filter Started Working Overtime
Cleaning the pond became far more difficult than simply skimming the surface. The filtration system clogged repeatedly because shredded grass collected inside the intake. I found myself rinsing filter pads far more often than usual.
The extra organic material also began breaking down in the water. A slimy coating appeared on several rocks near the pond’s edge, something I had never experienced before.
My Koi Stopped Coming to the Surface
The biggest warning came when feeding time changed. Normally the koi rushed toward me the moment they heard footsteps. Instead, they lingered near the bottom of the pond and showed little interest in eating.
Concerned, I contacted a local pond maintenance specialist. After inspecting the water, he explained that decomposing grass could contribute to excess nutrients, encouraging algae growth and reducing overall water quality if the problem continued.
I Tried Speaking With the Crew Directly
The next Thursday I approached the landscaping crew before they finished. I politely asked whether they could angle the blowers away from the fence because the debris kept entering my pond.
The crew leader apologized immediately. He admitted he had never realized a koi pond sat just beyond the fence. He promised to remind the workers before leaving the property.
For one week, the improvement was obvious.
A Different Crew Arrived
The following Thursday, however, an entirely different crew showed up. They repeated the same routine as the earlier workers, sending another wave of clippings into my backyard. My previous conversation had solved nothing because the company rotated employees every week.
I contacted Karen again and explained what had happened. This time she sounded impatient and insisted landscaping naturally created some mess. According to her, I was expecting perfection.
The Green Sludge Spread Across the Surface
As summer progressed, algae became much more noticeable. Green films collected along calm sections of the pond, especially after fresh clippings entered the water. Even though I cleaned constantly, the pond never fully recovered before the next mowing.
Neighbors who remembered how clear the pond once looked started asking whether something was wrong. It became frustrating to explain the same story over and over.
An Unexpected Visitor Offered Proof
One afternoon another neighbor, Mike, stopped by while walking his dog. He mentioned that his driveway security camera overlooked part of Karen’s side yard. Without me asking, he offered to review footage from recent mowing days.
The recordings clearly showed workers intentionally blowing clippings toward the back fence instead of collecting them. The debris traveled over the fence line exactly as I had described. For the first time, I had evidence that the problem was not simply wind.
The Landscaping Company Responded Immediately
Instead of arguing with Karen again, I contacted the landscaping company’s office and calmly explained the situation. I shared still images from the video along with photographs showing the pond before and after mowing days.
The manager sounded genuinely concerned. He explained that crews were trained to avoid directing debris onto neighboring properties and asked for copies of the images so he could address the issue internally.
A Supervisor Watched the Next Visit
The following week, a supervisor arrived with the landscaping crew. Before anyone started working, he walked around the property and looked over the fence at the pond. He immediately understood the concern.
Throughout the entire visit, workers carefully collected grass instead of blowing it toward neighboring yards. They even used collection bags on the mowers to reduce loose clippings. When the job finished, not a single blade of grass landed in my pond.
The Water Slowly Came Back to Life
It took several weeks of careful cleaning, partial water changes, and filter maintenance before the pond finally began recovering. The algae gradually disappeared, the rocks regained their natural appearance, and the koi returned to the surface at feeding time.
Karen never admitted she had dismissed the problem too quickly, but she did switch to the company’s improved maintenance plan that required collecting yard waste instead of blowing it away. The weekly frustration finally ended.
Standing beside the pond now, I can once again hear nothing except flowing water and the gentle splash of koi breaking the surface. The experience taught me that small acts of carelessness repeated often enough can create major problems, but it also proved that a single company willing to take responsibility can fix a situation that seemed impossible only weeks earlier.
