By the time it was finished, stepping outside no longer felt peaceful.

Construction Started Without Raising Any Concerns

One morning I noticed stacks of lumber neatly arranged beside my neighbor Greg’s garage. He waved as I walked to my mailbox and casually mentioned he was finally building an above ground deck for family gatherings. It sounded like a reasonable project, and I wished him luck before continuing with my day.

For the next several days, contractors dug footings and assembled the frame. Nothing about the work caught my attention because plenty of homeowners in our neighborhood had similar decks. I assumed this one would simply face the back of Greg’s yard like the others.

The Frame Began Climbing Higher

As more of the structure went up, I realized the deck sat much higher than I expected. Instead of stopping just above the patio doors, it continued rising until it overlooked the surrounding fences. Standing on the unfinished platform, workers could already see directly into my vegetable beds.

I told myself it probably only looked tall because the railing had not been installed yet. Once construction finished, I figured the angle would feel less intrusive. I wanted to believe I was worrying over nothing.

My Garden Was Suddenly on Display

The first evening after the deck was completed, I carried a watering can toward my tomatoes. Before I reached the raised beds, I heard voices behind me. Greg and two friends were sitting on the new deck talking while looking across the neighborhood.

I glanced up and immediately realized they had a completely unobstructed view of my backyard. Every section of my garden, my patio furniture, and even the bench beneath the maple tree were visible from where they sat.

Small Moments Became Uncomfortable

At first I tried to ignore the feeling. People have the right to enjoy their own property, and I did not want to create unnecessary tension. Still, it became difficult to relax when someone was almost always sitting above fence level.

I admitted they did. She frowned and said she would feel uncomfortable spending time outside under those circumstances. Hearing someone else notice the same thing made me realize I was not imagining the problem.

As summer continued, Greg hosted friends almost every weekend. Conversations, laughter, and outdoor dinners filled the elevated deck. None of that bothered me by itself. The problem was constantly seeing people looking over the fence line whenever I stepped outside.

Sometimes I would carry gardening tools across the yard only to notice several people sitting quietly above me. Whether they were actually watching or simply talking among themselves no longer mattered. The feeling remained the same.

An Unexpected Comment Changed Everything

One afternoon I planted peppers near the back fence while Greg’s relatives visited. As I stood up, someone on the deck called out, “Your tomatoes are looking better than ours this year.”

The comment was friendly, but it immediately confirmed something I had hoped was not true. They had been observing my garden closely enough to notice how individual plants had changed over time. That realization stayed with me long after they left.

The privacy panels and new landscaping transformed the space more than I expected. Young evergreen trees gradually filled in, vines climbed the trellises, and the direct sightline disappeared.
